In Cases on the Canadian Law of Insurance , Baer and Rendall (2000) indicate that "insurance is one means of dealing with risk and the fundamental principle of insurance is a pooling of risks."

The Dictionary of Canadian Law (2nd edition., 1995) sets out the basic elements which are common to "insurance":

(i) An undertaking of one person; (ii) to indemnify another person; (iii) to pay a sum of money or other thing of value; (iv) from loss or liability in respect of an event; (v) the happening of which is uncertain.
