Criminology In D. Stuart, 'Canadian Criminal Law' (2d ed.) 1987, Criminology has been defined as "The study of the nature, causes, treatment or punishment of criminal behaviour." The John Howard Society of Canada Includes information on programs, services, and publications throughout Canada. The Criminology Information Service (CIS) A part of the the Centre for Criminology at the University of Toronto, the CIS houses the leading Canadian research collection of criminological materials, consisting of more than 25,000 books, journals, government reports, statistics and other documents which can also be accessed via the World Wide Web. Covers such topics as public and private policing, violence, deviance and social control, young offenders, criminology and criminal law. Provides searches of electronic and print sources, Internet searches, background packages for trial preparation, document delivery, and current awareness services. In addition, provides free access to Crimdoc, the only up-to-date index to Juristat, the primary source of Canadian crime statistics. The CIS also produces specialized topical bibliographies, and recent acquisitions and serials holding lists. Resources for Criminology and Forensics An excellent site from the University of New Brunswick encompasses criminology/criminal justice, forensic sciences, law enforcement, statistics, reference resources, and related fields. Research Sites on the Internet for Criminology From Douglas College Department of Criminology, this site offers a comprehensive list of research sites for criminology. Provides resources that are valuable for researching papers, presentations, and projects in the study of criminology. AustraliaThe Australian Institute of Criminology The Institute, dedicated to the study of crime and criminal justice in Australia, disseminates criminal justice information. The site provides information, including criminal justice statistics, libraries, and news releases concerning Australia and New Zealand. Includes two full-text journals, Research and Public Policy as well as Trends and Issues in Crime and Criminal Justice. Full-text conference proceedings are also available. The Criminology Research Council information includes meetings, grant information, and annual reports. United StatesThis site, a comprehensive online network for corrections and criminal justice professionals, provides resources of interest to associations, prisons, sheriffs, and correctional officers. The U.S. National Institute of Corrections Offers training, technical assistance, information services, and policy/program development assistance to Federal, state, and local corrections agencies. The Western Society of Criminology Dedicated to the study of crime, this site includes academics, students, government officials, and public and private practitioners. Provides an electronic version of "The Western Criminologist", the official newsletter of the WSC. "The Redwood Highway" section provides links to sites dealing with criminology, including sites covering law enforcement, law and the courts, corrections, and special issues such as terrorism and organized crime, juvenile justice, the death penalty, etc. Additional links are available for listservs and discussion groups,job and internship, and government sites. The Office for Victims of Crime The office provides funding and grants to programs offering assistance and compensation to crime victims, as well as training for program workers. The site is geared principally for the public rather than the legal profession. The "Help for Victims" section lists resources and programs available for numerous categories including sexual assault and child abuse, campus crime, elder abuse, stalking, kids as victims, workplace crime, and American Indians. Contains the text of the International Crime Victims Compensation Program Directory which covers European and some North American and Asian countries. A search engine is provided to retrieve statewide reports, bulletins, and chapters from training publications on assisting victims. The Justice Information Center (NCJRS) NCJRS offers one of the most extensive sources of information on criminal and juvenile justice in the world. Includes resources on corrections, courts, crime prevention, criminal justice statistics, drugs and crime, international juvenile justice, law enforcement, research and evaluation, victims, etc. International and ComparativeThe United Nations Interregional Crime & Justice Research Institute(UNICRI) The Institute, maintained in Rome (Italy), is dedicated to the prevention and control of juvenile delinquency and adult criminality. This global site contains two databases which contain abstracts of articles. The World Directory of Criminological Resources offers more than 470 institutes covering some 70 countries, and the LMS Bibliographic Collection searches more than 6000 authors and 300 series. The LMS Alert Service provides a free weekly email notification of new and updated entries. In addition, the site contains full-text reports and information on the current projects dealing with such issues as trafficking in human beings, organized crime, and corruption. |
